Horse markets

by Pili

People often think that butchers' horses go directly from 'the producer to the consumer', but this is frequently not the case. Practically everywhere, merchants gather the horses together for big markets where meat wholesalers come for supplies.

It's not so much the fact that humans eat horsemeat that disturbs me, but rather the lamentable journey that these poor animals have to make before ending up on the plate of horsemeat eaters.

I have visited several slaughterhouse markets and everywhere the images are just as shocking. An atmosphere of terrorism reigns in these places, there's no place for feelings, the horses are nothing but 'sausages in waiting', and the fact that they are still alive and can feel anguish or pain does not seem to cross the minds of the visitors or tourists, not to mention the 'merchants'.
